Most of the pieces in this issue turn out to be about recognition: how it is manufactured, how it is priced, and what escapes it.
Two extracts from my forthcoming book, The Grail Problem, begin with the most recognisable chronograph in the world. The first argues that the Daytona everyone wants corresponds to no reference Rolex ever sold. It is a composite assembled backwards out of its own variants, and much of its vocabulary was written by dealers, auctioneers and obsessives rather than in Bienne. The second approaches the same watch from the other side. Over sixty years Rolex replaced nearly every measurable part, and the one thing it kept unchanged is the moment of recognition itself.
Antoine Preziuso has spent forty-five years declining to be recognised from across a room. Over an afternoon at his atelier near Geneva he talks about Patek Philippe, Harry Winston, 2008 and ChatGPT, and his watches never settle into a house style. Rolex keeps the grammar and changes the words. Preziuso keeps the motives and lets the form wander. Read side by side, it is hard to say which is the more deliberate strategy.
Market Value Is Not Collecting Value takes the question to the saleroom, where a price has been promoted from a record of appetite to a verdict on merit. It proposes a subtraction test: remove the number and see what you still want.
Geneva Watch Days 2026 applies the same arithmetic to a week. The organisers counted seventy-one brands and nearly four hundred novelties. In the suites the figures were ceilings, and the currency that mattered was the half-hour meeting, which cannot be multiplied. The most eloquent answer to who made this? was a straw-marquetry dial that carries no name at all.
Finally, The Classifieds (But Not Really), Volume 15, gives the floor to the watches. Ten new releases from independents speak for themselves, and each is seeking someone. One of them claims that a number can be a signature. After everything above, you can decide whether to believe it.

An Afternoon with Antoine Preziuso: The Watchmaker Who Refused a Signature
Last spring, I spent an afternoon with Antoine Preziuso at his home atelier near Geneva. It is the kind of place in which the distinction between workshop, archive and living space has become largely academic...

THE CLASSIFIEDS (BUT NOT REALLY) Vol. 15
You won’t find full specs here. You will find intent, posture, poetry. These are horological classifieds for new releases from independents — announcements, invitations, provocations — interpreted for the collector’s subconscious.
The next issue will be published on October 18, 2026.
A great issue. Lots of interesting, informative, and thought provoking content.
